Some helpful questions answered on Network Distributors:
-
What could AMI mean to Network Distributors?
Network distributors have the opportunity to gain more granular information on electricity supplied across their network.
In real terms, the benefits include power quality data that can be used for improved services, network management and planning; consumption information to help construct more tailored line charges; and outage information to help spot causes and manage restoration timeframes.

What is Smart Grid?
Smart grid is a term used for gathering information about the network, enabling data to be retrieved about its performance. AMI can provide a smart grid service by supplying distributors with information about how their network is functioning.
-
What is load management?
Load management refers to the ability to reduce load on a network when the lines and distribution infrastructure reach their maximum capacity. In New Zealand load management is used extensively to manage the network load and maximise the efficiency of the network. This is usually done by turning off water heaters for a few hours during peak times, with no noticeable effect on customers. AMI can provide load management services, or work alongside existing load management systems to enhance these services.

What is power quality?
Power quality refers to the usefulness of the power being delivered to your home. Poor power quality can mean that more line capacity is required to deliver the same amount of energy to your home, which generally adds extra costs to the electricity industry. In some cases it is useful to monitor power quality to ensure that the power network is being used efficiently, and that the power delivered is within regulated limits. AMI can assist in monitoring and reporting power quality to support Distributors in finding ways to improve their network efficiency.
